Metro Tunnel Project

Cross Yarra Partnership $12B+

The Metro Tunnel will create a new end-to-end rail line from Sunbury in the west to Cranbourne/Pakenham in the south east, with bigger and better trains, next generation signalling technology and 5 new stations.

The Metro Tunnel will create capacity on the network to enable more than a half a million additional passengers per week across Melbourne’s train network to use the rail system during the peak periods. See the peak capacity increase for your train line.

Project Scope

  • Twin 9km rail tunnels from the west of the city to the south east as part of a new Sunbury to Cranbourne/Pakenham line
  • Building 5 new underground stations: Arden, Parkville (under Grattan Street), State Library (at the northern end of Swanston Street), Town Hall (at the southern end of Swanston Street) and Anzac (under the Domain Interchange on St Kilda Road). The 2 stations under Swanston Street will be directly connected to the City Loop at Melbourne Central and Flinders Street stations
  • High Capacity Signalling to enable more frequent services
  • Train/tram interchange between Anzac Station and the Domain Interchange
  • Upgrades on other suburban rail lines with benefits across the network
  • Safety features including platform screen doors.

Project benefits:

  • More services on the Warrnambool Line
  • More comfortable passenger journeys
  • Improved reliability on the Warrnambool Line
  • Faster service recovery from unexpected delays
  • VLocity trains able to stay overnight in Warrnambool
  • Safer level crossings
  • All public level crossings on the line will be protected by boom gates
  • Improved support for rail freight

Our Role in the Project

Our nominated T&S team member held a role (see listed below) within the design stage of Metro Tunnel project.

Senior Traction Power Engineer role on Metro Tunnel project involved responsibility for developing traction power design packages. This included:

  • Developing technical reports
  • Prepared HV and Traction Power underground substations design -power system calculations, layouts, SLDs, protection, specifications, datasheets, etc-
  • Running technical workshop with stakeholders -MTM, HCMT, etc-
  • Reviewed interfaces with other disciplines
  • Provided procurement services

Project Challenges & Achievements

The Metro Tunnel project was delivered by Cross Yarra Partnership. The public-private partnership works are being undertaken by the Cross Yarra Partnership (CYP) consortium. CYP comprises Lendlease Engineering, John Holland, Bouygues Construction and Capella Capital.

Designing a traction power system that satisfies all performance requirements, including constructability, maintenance and operational demands, was crucial due to the limited available real estate in each station, making building in the city quite a daunting task.

A considerable amount of work and innovative thinking was required to design the traction power system to make sure the operators would be able to maintain and replace the largest parts of electrical system e.g. power transformers and DC switchgears.

The human factors assessments were completed for each station to identify requirements for maintenance access based on tasks undertaken and tools utilised. This was documented in the design packages. The derived requirements were captured in DOORS (IBM® Engineering Requirements Management) and allocated to the relevant design packages
